Another central Illinois death reported from use of synthetic cannabis

PEORIA — A 46-year-old Tazewell County man has died of suspected synthetic cannabis use, Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Monday.

Three deaths have been reported in the state from synthetic cannabis use, including a 22-year-old Peoria man who died March 29. Harwood has said his death is still being investigated. The third death was reported Monday afternoon by the Illinois Department of Public Health. A department spokeswoman said only that the victim was from central Illinois.

In a news release Monday night, however, Harwood said he was “notified of a death related to suspected K2/Spice use.” The victim was a 46-year-old Tazewell County man who was pronounced dead at 10:25 a.m. Monday at a Peoria hospital.

He was born July 31, 1929, in Chicago to Irving and Dorothy Gordon Greenberg. He married Bonnie Mosiman on Feb. 9, 1994, in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are his children, Dean Greenberg of Carbondale and Nina Dunavan of Austin, Texas; his grandson, Abraham Traverso of Carbondale; his great-grandson, Mateo Traverso; and his sister, Nancy Plotkin of Chicago.

Preceding him in death were his parents and granddaughter, Leah Dunavan.

He was a graduate of the University of Illinois and the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor.

Simulating Poverty Realities in Greater Peoria

Peoria to expand housing for needy veterans

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — A central Illinois group is making progress on expanding housing for needy veterans.

Goodwill Industries of Central Illinois operates the Downing Home for Veterans in Peoria. It has received approval from the city’s planning commission to expand onto two additional vacant lots.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports the new wing will mean housing for five new residents. The building now houses 10 veterans. Goodwill provides job training and other assistance.

Goodwill President Don Johnson says the organization hopes to break ground this spring on the addition, pending Peoria City Council approval. Construction should be complete by late summer.

New program helps find permanent housing for Peoria’s homeless men

PEORIA — In a first for Peoria, a multi-agency initiative aims to transition homeless men toward permanent housing and better health.

The Interim Shelter Program is driven by a donation of $117,000 by OSF Healthcare, which on Friday publicly unveiled the effort with partners the Peoria Salvation Army, the South Side Office of Concern, the Heart of Illinois United Way and the Heart of Illinois Homeless Continuum of Care. The announcement was made at the site of the new program, the Salvation Army Sylvia Fites Family Service Center, 414 NE Jefferson St.

The collaboration, which began last month, already is filling a gap in homeless services in Peoria, said Robert Brandfass, senior vice president for OSF HealthCare.
